0 Update my volunteer work with AUDA, & Anas home Yoomsters photos around Panajachel, GuatemalaA TripAdvisor™ TripWow slideshow of a travel blog to Panajachel, Guatemala by TravelPod blogger Yoomster titled “Update-my volunteer work with AUDA, & Ana’s home!”

Yoomster’s travel blog entry:

“Many are you are wondering what’s been going on… and I know I haven’t updated recently. My apologies. I want to tell you news more often but I frequently find that I don’t want to type everything that I have experienced here, but now that I’ve held off too long I feel like I procrastinated on a college term paper! :-P

In sum, I am still having a grand time, and still learning about what is best for a nonprofit, as well as about myself. I have made friends here, spent time cooking, hanging out, dancing, hiking, exploring, swimming, kayaking, pilates-ing, practicing poi (fire spinning), speaking Spanish, and reading. Katherine visited me in mid-August too so we spent a night in a Nature Reserve past San Lucas Toliman, and an evening in Antigua!

Since I have been here, I have visited the three women’s cooperatives–Ana with the group Ajbatz’Bal’ in San Juan la Laguna; Julia with the group Asociacion Mujeres Ixkoqa Tzolojya in El Tablon; and Vicente with the group Artesanas Tzaput in Choa Cruz. These are the groups comprised of indigenous Mayan Kakchiqel and Tzutujil women, –the majority of them widows or abandoned– who are working toward selling their products and creating a better life for their families.

With regards to volunteering with AUDA, I find that it is definitely a challenge to do everything I want to do. I still am eager to assist the organization, and the women and children of the three cooperatives around Lake Atitlan. The test is balancing all the work, prioritizing the needs, and staying productive in this environment– similar nonprofits around the lake and Guatemala are requesting grants for similar projects; there is competition for selling the products to the correct buying niche (also a challenge with the poor economy); projects are time consuming and sometimes dependent on processing time; most Guatemalans have a “manana” mentality; and also staying positive despite knowing that we cannot help everyone. Unfortunately, Guatemala’s socioeconomic gap is enormous, and furthermore the disparity of wealth /living conditions between Ladinos and the Indigenous Mayan people is a harsh reality here in the Lake Atitlan region. So, even when I walk the main street of Panajachel, I see Indigenous folks–young and old, male and female– trying to sell a few woven goods for their food expenses but it bothers me that I cannot give money to all of them. At least what I do is visit and communicate with the women of the AUDA cooperatives to see how we can increase their product sales, and in turn, generate profit which will support their children’s school expenses or toward a home construction project, etc. Thus, I want to stick to the idea that we are assisting the women to empower themselves through their talented craftwork. Freida wants to focus on more house projects and is unsure about how or when the product sales will come about.

For the past two months and for a few months ahead, my responsibilities include: updating the website, creating a physical product catalog, designing product layout for the website, coordinating and monitoring community projects, making products available on eBay’s fair trade page World of Good, perhaps even designing some new products, establishing Fair Trade certification, grant researching and grant writing (will be tough!!), finding connections with people interested in selling our products in the USA, networking with those who may be able to work on community projects, fundraising, social networking (Facebook) to raise awareness, putting together workshops for the women to learn about better business practices/design/productivity, ETC.

ANA HAS A HOME. THANK YOU FOR YOUR SUPPORT.
The update I want to share with you is that Ana now has a home! I remember visiting her in July and she was so distraught about her situation and unsure about the future of her children. She was crying in desperation, which moved me to tears. I spent time trying to raise awareness and ask for help. Last week, Freida and I visited her and she was crying tears of JOY. With generous donations amounting to $1,500, and another contribution
from Bob and Freida Cox, we were able to provide materials so that the
young adults with Global Challenge Expeditions (Christian Mission group …”

PART 1 – http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9BoGVdL51lM
PART 2 – http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bIfLBSDPkgI
CCPP is a grass roots project that works with underprivileged children in Sihanoukville, Cambodia.

Our children struggle daily with uncaring or abusive parents, living in extremely impoverished households, lacking regular access to food, clean drinking water and medical care.

Our children come from the beaches in the local area, collecting cans and bottles for a meager return or selling bracelets and such to tourists for money.

Our objective is to provide these vulnerable children with the opportunity to develop their imagination and skills through artistic expression, and providing them a safe place to play, learn and dream. Through education we strive to provide them an opportunity of a future. At the heart of our work is the belief that education and knowledge is the antidote to poverty and exploitation.
