Pure Works exists for the benefit of orphans and widows. Pure Works visits and subsidizes existing and ongoing missions both domestically and in third-world countries with medicine, medical supplies, medical equipment, food, clothing, books and computers.

Essentially, we need a team of people willing to do whatever we throw at them so that the entire project doesn’t fall apart. If you think you can handle this, we need you most of all!

The Leelanau Christian Neighbors food pantries help Leelanau County residents who are dealing with unemployment and other emergencies in their lives. This charity also provides numerous volunteer opportunities for community service. The Green Team is a natural resource conservation group based in the City of Edinburgh consisting entirely of volunteers who give up their time, volunteering for the conservation and sustainability of our wild places in and around the Lothians which includes the areas around Edinburgh, Midlothian and East Lothian. The groups main body of volunteering is by young people, aged 14-25 who come along on various day and weekend projects going green green to save the environment through volunteer work who learn about the natural heritage, environmental issues as well as the importance of protecting our environment and recycling. Since 1995, a total of over 1700 young people have worked with the Green Team improving their local area with one of the conservation organizations inviting conservation for kids where young people to carry out a community service for their area. There are also offers of conservation jobs and conservation careers with the Green Team.
The Green Team wildlife conservation work projects are highly practical, full of fun and teamwork, conservation efforts aiming to teach environment protection; don’t believe me then keep reading on.
The day projects usually take place on a Sunday where the participants arrive together, carry out some ice breaking activities followed up by a tool talk and then travel via mini bus to a conservation site somewhere in the Lothians. In the past, the Green Team has been to places such as Vogrie Country Park, the John Muir Country Park and the Water of Leith. The projects usually begin in the morning at 9:00am departing from New Parliament House (5-7 Regent Road), Edinburgh and finish about 17:00pm where parents can collect their child or they can make their own way back home.
The environmental protection projects typically include activities such as nature walks, bird watching, learning to use tools in safety and using natural resources to create artwork, learning how to live green. Joining the Green Team gives you the chance to gain some experience working with a conservation and environment organization meeting new people and above all to have fun. Each day costs £10 per person which also includes mini bus transport a a mug of hot chocolate and even some roasted marshmallows for the green conservative.
In addition to the day projects, the Green Team also run green conservation weekend residential projects where volunteers stay in a hostel or temporary accommodation for the evening. It’s a fantastic experience and speaking from my own personal experience, it’s something that everyone should try going green once if not more. The residential conservation programs are really good especially as they give a group longer time to bond and get to know one another. They also improve teamwork skills through a variety of conservation tasks to save environment such as cutting back weeds, planting trees, building bird boxes, repairing paths or cleaning up ponds. The weekend projects cost £25.00 per person which includes transport, accommodation and food.

I produced this video for the Green Team in 2009 as part of my HND in Film and Television production where I thought of many of the conservation groups who might be interested in having a promotional video for their website. I had joined the Green Team myself in 2006 so had many prior experiences of volunteering with the team on their weekend and day projects. I really enjoyed making this video as I had more creative control over the look of the final piece and because of it’s topic in the outdoors which is a passion of my own.
I entered the film into the annual Edinburgh Cine and Video Society and won some awards for Best Overall Film with the Lizar’s Trophy, Best use of Editing with the Reg Carden Scissors and also the Bill Walker Trophy for best use of sound. It’s also been shortlisted in the Source magzine, a young people’s magazine short film competition with the finalists announced at the Glasgow Film Theatre in October, 2010. Remember to go green and keep up the conservation of resources keeping the planet green earth conservation work up.

Rather than pay some astronomical amount to a company that arranges volunteer opportunities in Nepal, Hugo Caminero, drummer with the popular Spanish cover band RETO 999, decided to make his own volunteer opportunity. He bought a dozen drums, hopped on a plane to Pokhara, Nepal, and began knocking on orphanage doors. When he got to the Protection and Rehabilitation Centre for Street Children, they welcomed him with open arms. Modeling his efforts of the program of Carlinhos Brown, a Brazilian born musician who changed the face of the slum known as Candeal Pequeno by teaching its younger residents how to drum, Hugo began teaching the children at the rehabilitation to drum. He arrives every afternoon with two other musicians he met in local pubs, and drills the kids on the art of drumming. In a flash, they morph from a ragtag bunch of undisciplined urchins to a cohesive musical unit, even helping one another out rather than their normal bickering and fighting. This way, not only is Hugo making a difference, he can be assured that every penny is spent on the children who need help, rather than lining the pockets of volunteer organizations who funnel little of the pricey fees they charge back to the agencies they purport to help.
