I plan to take part in a lot of volunteer work this year. How would I officially submit this work to Colleges? It can’t be as easy as citing where I’ve worked, because if it were that easy people would just make up a bunch of stuff they really didn’t volunteer for. When I volunteer is there a paper I need authorized or signed?
Any other tips would be helpful as well, thanks!

The best way to know, is to ask directly to the admission department of the colleges you are considering to enter. In what way would be the best to show them that you really do the volunteer work and how would they give credit for you for that.

Having kind of portfolio including pictures of you when you’re doing the work, and also hand-writing messages from people you work with about what they feel about you being with them – would be great ideas. Maybe you would also want some authority person in your volunteer work make short acknowledgement about you too.

Compress them all within 2-4 pages only for easy reading, and attached them in your colleges application. I’m sure if you’re done your homework right (ie. find out who you should address this to in your application & in what form), you’ll get the credit you deserve.

Obama wants to revive the Kennedy ideal of 1 year of community service.Would you do it if voluntary? What kind of work would you choose?

When I was a teenager? Absolutely.

As an adult? If the schedule was available. I wouldn’t want a system where I was forced into doing X hours of community service – I couldn’t balance my school and work life if I had to do so many hours every week. If I had a flexible schedule, I certainly would.

I would volunteer in a hospital since I am going into healthcare.

…I could teach computer skills, MS Office products, and web design. I’m looking to help folks who have returned from service and need help launching a new career.

Go to the VA, they need volunteers with your experience. You may even get a part time job doing this type of work.

Locate the nearest VA hospital or clinic in your area at this link.

You might also contact the unemployment office, they often use volunteers or even hire them part time to assist veterans in developing skills to locate a job.

Does anyone know of any sites that i can find information out about getting a voluntary job in gambia. I would like to work with childen.

I suggest you try www.getsuk.org (Gambia Education & Teaching Support) – a British charity which does exactly what it says on the tin.

On their website you’ll find information about volunteering in Gambian primary schools and nurseries (for which you will need a police check.)

They are also affiliated to GTS (Gambia Tourist Support) – another charity providing support for tourists whilst creating jobs for locals. On their website www.gambiatouristsupport.com you’ll find lots of useful ‘tell it like it is’ stuff about The Gambia in general.

0 Irelands National Day of Volunteering Flash Mob VideoFriday 1st October 2010, was Ireland’s National Day of Volunteering organized by Volunteer Centres Ireland (VCI). To celebrate, at 11am on the day itself, 100s of over-55s participated in flashmobs around the country.

This video captures the creative flashmob dance at Heuston train station in the capital city of Dublin.

Generally undertaken by younger people, these flashmobs comprised mostly of older people and drew attention to the significant contribution older people make as volunteers in Irish society.

Older people bring significant life experience and valuable skills to bear on their volunteering. The beneficiaries of this enthusiasm and commitment are the thousands of community and voluntary organizations older people volunteer with and the thousands more individuals and causes with which they volunteer.

European Voluntary Service for Young People

EVS FOR YOUNG PEOPLE

European Voluntary Service (EVS) is a fantastic opportunity for you to carry out a period of full time voluntary service abroad from 2 to 12 months. The programme is open to all young people aged 18-30 legally resident in the UK.

How does EVS work?

EVS is based on a partnership between a host project, the volunteer and a sending organisation. Volunteers carry out their volunteering placement in a host project outside the UK. Volunteers choose from accredited EVS projects that interest them. Host projects select volunteers for the vacancies they have. Applications for funding are made on the volunteers behalf by either the host or sending organisation.

Benefits:

•gain confidence and independence

•experience a different culture

•learn new skills and develop competencies

•contribute to the local host community
