Next year, the Peace Corps will celebrate its fiftieth anniversary. Peace Corps volunteers are Americans who teach and work on projects in developing countries. The United States created the Peace Corps during the cold war with the Soviet Union. Today, technology has changed how the volunteers do their work and stay connected with friends and family back home. In the early nineteen eighties, Gordy Mengel served in Zaire, now the Democratic Republic of Congo. Letters from home would take weeks, or months. As a result, he socialized more with people in the local community. He lost contact with friends and family back in the States. Today, Gordy Mengel is a Peace Corps programming and training officer in Rwanda. He says these days are different because of the Internet and cell phone service. When volunteers go back to their homes in villages, they can get on Skype or they give a quick call to Mom and Dad back at home. Sonia Morhange is one of about one hundred Peace Corps volunteers in Rwanda. She talks with a friend in California on Skype, an Internet calling service. She talks with her mother on the phone and e-mails her father. She says: “I can’t imagine having been a Peace Corps volunteer in the seventies or the eighties or even the early nineties. I’m just so used to everyone having a cell phone that works internationally. I’m very, very lucky in the fact that where I live I have wireless Internet and that makes it a lot easier.” Peace Corps volunteers receive a living allowance and other benefits in return for twenty-seven months of training and service. John Reddy is the country director in Rwanda. He says fairly easy access to the Internet means that volunteers can do more than just call home. They can research subjects to help their communities. And, through the Peace Corps Partnership Program, they can get donations online for their projects. But John Reddy admits he sometimes misses the old days, before the Internet and good phone service. He says volunteers had more independence then. You can comment on this story and find other Education Reports online at voaspecialenglish.com. One that i don’t have to have more then a high school education for.
And dont require you to have to pay for transportation ect.
You might want to look into Habitat for Humanity – they do a lot of work outside of the US and don’t usually require special skills. Also, idealist.org and volunteermatch can give you more suggestions, although finding a group willing to pay your international travel expenses could be hard if you don’t have an advanced education or particular body of knowledge in high demand (computer/technical, etc).
The Peace Corps requires a minimum of a college degree and strongly prefers previous international experience.
I’m having trouble getting a job, and most of it has to do with not having enough work experiance. I’m thinking volunteer work can help me out with that.
The thing is, i want to make sure whatever volunteer i decide to do will get me a job when i apply for that position.
What should i volunteer for? how many hours should i volunteer a day for?
Things i won’t volunteer for, Office work, library,
5 stars for a good answer
Ok office work and library you are not intrested in.
Things i think would be good for you would have to be something with customer service.
Resturaut- dish washer, bus boy, server, front desk
Cleaning-hotel maintence, hostpital mainitence,
those are just examples to give you an example. you should look for jobs that are in big demand in your state, and see if you can volunteer to get some expriance under your belt.
2 or maybe 3 hours a day should be enough to learn what you need to get a job demanding on how long you volunteer and what you learned in that time.
good luck
Australian Accounting Standards require those who have received donations of money or goods to record these donations in their Balance Sheet as "donation in kind". It is optional to account for donations of service/labour.
Unless AU plans to tax the organization for the donation of labor, why record it? With goods and money, the organization needs to keep records to show that it is receiving financial support from legit sources and to support whatever tax adjustments are allowed to the donors. But that isn’t necessary for time.
Seems like this proposal would discourage good works and make operation of a charity more difficult than it needs to be.
I am currently living in Canada and am looking for an opportunity to do some volunteer work for an organization abroad. I’ve done some research, but need some insight.
I am no longer a student, so student programs are out.
I have my Canadian and European citizenship.
I suggest you look to your local volunteer centers for assistance. Volunteer centers provide the necessary connection between volunteers and project opportunities.
